So tell me a little bit about yourself?

“So tell me a little bit about yourself?”

This might be an easy question for some but for me it’s the most frequent and daunting one I have to answer.

“Well, I was born in Nepal, moved to NYC when I was 12 years old and now at the age of 26 I moved to Richmond, VA. It’ been 7 months since I’ve been here.”

“Oh wow! Nepal! It’s been on top of my travel bucket list. I would love to climb Mt. Everest one day.”

“Oh, really? I’m actually headed there this April for a visit after 14 years!”

Some people get the excitement and the magnitude of my statement. I only proceed in my conversation with those people.

“Holy cow! That’s a long time. It’s wonderful that you’re doing it.”

“I know right?” I reply with a slight lean, nod, and a huge grin on my face “My cousin who is a professional life coach is hosting a 3 day festival called Creativeness Fest. She is gathering a great panel of motivational speakers, business entrepreneurs, shamans, and inspirational leaders; she wants me to be part of her endeavor. We want to help create a vision of a new Nepal filled with infinite possibilities and a new generation of leaders since the government doesn’t seem to be doing much.”

“That’s amazing, girl! I’m so excited for you.”

“Isn’t it?! For 14 years I didn’t have any desire to return to my homeland. I have a very dysfunctional and estranged family situation there so I dreaded the thought of seeing some of them. But now I have found a cause that transcends my silly fears. My yearning to reconnect with my birthplace has taken over and I have a real purpose for my visit. I want to help my people who are in desperate need of hope and encouragement because of the earthquake last year.”

“Oh no! There was an earthquake last year? How bad was it?”

“Pretty bad, over 8,000 people died and more than 21,000 were injured. It’s going to be a long recovery.”

“Ugh, that’s too bad. Oh wells so have you heard about this new brewery opening in town called Stone Brewing. It’s supposed to be legit girl, you better get your drink on this weekend.”

“Nice, I will be sure to check it out. Oh wells I have to run some very important errand that I forgot about. Great chatting with you girl!"
