Writing Other People: Creating Real and Compassionate Characters in Creative Nonfiction with Elizabeth Ferris

Maybe the only thing trickier than exposing ourselves on the page is exposing others, especially loved ones. In this three-hour workshop, we’ll explore techniques for bringing other people alive compellingly & compassionately in our essays and memoirs. We’ll also discuss the pitfalls and perils of writing about people we know, and how we can successfully navigate that on our own terms. This class is open to all experience levels and will involve a combination of close-readings of book excerpts and essays, discussion, and three guided writing exercises.
