The most empowering thing a person can do is to reclaim the story of their life. We carry shame and fear that the world will discover the truth - we've experienced pain, we've made mistakes, we are faking it a lot of the time. The truth is that none of us are born with an instruction manual and NO ONE knows what the hell they are doing.

If you have decided you want to stop hiding, stop pretending, and take back your power then ReStory is your gateway.

In this series you will:

Learn to tell a great story; to find humor, lessons, and meaning in the challenging experiences of your life. You will connect with other creative people and a nurturing instructor in a safe environment. At the end you will stand-up to share your unique and important perspective with your classmates and invited guests. Each participant will prepare a 5 minute piece to be shared at the final performance.

Your story belongs to you. It has the power to change the world. Learn to tell it in a way that makes you feel proud of who you are and of all you've overcome.

Writers are thieves--of their own lives. Learn how to tap into your experiences, memories and flashes of insight to jump start that novel, short story, poem, memoir blog or creative journal that's been lurking beneath the surface. In these "writing from life" workshops, we'll explore how to access the right side of the brain, side-step writer's block and get all of our words, thoughts and ideas onto the page, determining the genre only after the essential words have been written. Join me for a 6 week series of reading, writing and sharing work aloud in class, that will result in your own portfolio of raw material, fresh ideas and beginnings that beg for your return. Please bring a journal and pen or pencil as we write by hand. Coffee and tea provided!

Writing to Heal Workshops for Our Community with Valley Haggard (9/21/19)
150.00

Class Date(s)

Saturday, September 21st from 10am-3pm.

Class Details

Life in 10 Minutes classes and books, The Halfway House for Writers and Surrender Your Weapons: Writing to Heal have been used with incarcerated women, war veterans, victims of sex trafficking, seniors in assisted-living, high school creative writing students, medical students, gender studies students, yoga teachers, Presbyterian deacons, recovering co-dependents, addicts, alcoholics, budding creatives and entrepreneurs, copywriters, first time writers, librarians, and small groups gathered together in living rooms across the city.

Writing in community fosters healing and connection. When our creativity is sparked and our memories and experiences are shared, our brains are rewired for empathy, compassion, forgiveness, and reflection. Writing is a timeless and accessible vehicle for processing, bonding, and more deeply getting to know ourselves and those around us. Writing in community bypasses the technology that has a tendency to make us feel connected but in truth keeps us isolated and apart.

If you are a community member, teacher or leader who would like to incorporate the teachings of Life in 10 Minutes into the work you already do or would like to begin doing, we’d love to share with you the teachings that have supported growth, transformation and healing in our workshops for the last 10 years. Participants will come away with a new set of tools for engaging their community, offering healing, and a concrete guide for harnessing the power of writing to transform lives.

Writing about Trauma with Cindy Cunningham (9/28/19)
60.00

Class Date(s)

September 28th, 1pm-4pm

Class Details

Writing can help us make sense of painful, seemingly nonsensical moments. These moments of trauma may stem from loss of a loved one, loss of innocence, addiction, accidents, etc. Putting words on a page allows us to make some sense of these events, but how do we approach those dark moments without retraumatizing ourselves? In addition, how do we write about traumatic events in such a way that the writing holds a greater meaning? What lesson might it impart? Why do these stories matter?

This class is open to all experience levels and will involve a combination of readings, discussion, and writing. You will leave the workshop with some articles and information on how to write about your experience.

A Deliberate Construction: The Art and Craft of Memoir with Elizabeth Ferris (Summer Session)
295.00

Class Date(s)

August 12 & 13 and 19 & 20, 9:30-11:30am.

Class Details

“Memoir isn’t the summary of a life; it’s a window into a life, very much like a photograph in its selective composition. It may look like a casual and even random calling up of bygone events. It’s not; it’s a deliberate construction.”—William Zinsser

Our lives are big, messy, beautiful, crazy things. So how do we tame them into a single project like a book? In this 4-session intensive we’ll talk about approaches and strategies for giving shape to our life stories on the page. We’ll read excerpts from published memoirs, engage in discussions of the craft, and put lessons into practice through guided writing exercises. Writers will also have the opportunity to workshop a piece of writing during our second week of class to receive feedback from their instructor and classmates.

This class is ideally suited to writers who have dreams of writing a memoir but aren’t sure where to begin, or writers who have found their drafts have stalled out. Because this is an intensive designed to maximize writers’ exposure to the topic, some outside “homework” will be required. Outside work will not exceed one hour per session (for a total of 4 hours), and the instructor will provide all reading materials.

Lying on Purpose : A Crash Course in Fiction Writing with Elizabeth Ferris (Session 5 PM)
295.00

Class Date(s)

September 9 & 10 and 16 & 17, 7-9pm.

Class Details

Albert Camus famously called fiction, “the lie through which we tell the truth.” In this 4-session intensive we’ll take a deep dive into the world of fiction writing and explore how “lying” on the page can actually work to bring reality into sharper focus. We’ll explore questions of craft and theme through a combination of close readings of short stories and novel excerpts, discussion, and workshopping of our own material. This class is ideally suited to beginning fiction writers and fiction-curious writers, as well as practiced fiction writers who are looking for new perspective on their work.
