Class Details

Albert Camus famously called fiction, “the lie through which we tell the truth.” In this 4-session intensive we’ll take a deep dive into the world of fiction writing and explore how “lying” on the page can actually work to bring reality into sharper focus. We’ll explore questions of craft and theme through a combination of close readings of short stories and novel excerpts, discussion, and workshopping of our own material. This class is ideally suited to beginning fiction writers and fiction-curious writers, as well as practiced fiction writers who are looking for new perspective on their work.

Because this is an intensive designed to maximize writers’ exposure to the topic, some outside “homework” will be required. Outside work will not exceed one hour per session (for a total of 4 hours), and the instructor will provide all reading materials. During the second week of instruction, students will also have the opportunity to workshop a piece of writing for feedback from their instructor and classmates.
