Day Hike

Under the dripping pines
the men talk of gadgets:
a new phone with more games,
a portable blood pressure monitor.
The mothers hand out snacks:
crackers, raisins,
shining tubes of yoghurt.
The men call for more pace:
the goal lies up ahead,
embrace the challenge.
The mothers murmur of
exercise programs, outgrown shoes,
period pains, mutual friends.
The trail forks,
choices offered.
The mothers turn away,
caught in the slipstream of
their striding men.
