A Safe Return

Underneath the earth he would burrow,
covered in regret as the day gave way to night.
Doom always lurking close behind,
waiting just underneath the skin.
Crawling over organs and bones
until it had made its way above the flesh.
There was no shaking this kind of demon,
that crept around with such purpose.
Whispering the sounds of failure in his ear,
the light aching turning to a full blown collapse.
The change in him unmistakable as the voice grew stronger.
I watched as he retreated further and further inside,
until soon the man was no longer recognizable.
Determined to swim even deeper, I of course followed.
With the love of a girl I waded in the shallow end,
never once with any hope of catching him,
simply hoping for a safe return.
