Summer

It had all the earmarks of goodbye
that night
now, so far away, so fleeting

Only I did not know it at the time.

Like a detective, I piece the story together
the words, the gestures
the look on your face
what you could not bear to tell me

Now I see from behind
the finality of it
Your gift meant to remind me
of a time when I mattered more
A time when you could find me
in a place that even I
did not know existed
