Lost and Found

Lately, I am losing things:
keys glasses papers
they are here and then gone
some days I swear, there are robbers in my house
mischievous spirits having their fun with me

On the scale of things of course
these are insignificant
only the flotsam and jetsam
of daily life

More alarmingly, though
I am losing other things
my eyesight
my hair
my memory
dear friends and family

I suppose it is inevitable
this growing old
we did of course sign on from birth
without quite understanding the contract
we made with our lives

Someone forgot to inform us
that we only have things for a short time
mostly we only learn this
after they are gone

But there is good news!
I am also losing things I never wanted anyway
those false friends
that are a triple threat to my sanity:
fear
expectations
illusive longings

They are slipping away like the summer
and being replaced with
gratitude for finding
on a good day
a favorite lost earring
